Swine-flu outbreak could be linked to Smithfield factory farms
Grist.org, Tom Philpott, April 25, 2009

(...) Is Smithfield Foods, the world’s largest pork packer and hog producer, linked to the outbreak?

Paula Hay (...) has written about it on her blog:
Residents [of Perote] believed the outbreak had been caused by contamination from pig breeding farms located in the area. They believed that the farms, operated by Granjas Carroll, polluted the atmosphere and local water bodies, which in turn led to the disease outbreak. According to residents, the company denied responsibility for the outbreak and attributed the cases to “flu.” However, a municipal health official stated that preliminary investigations indicated that the disease vector was a type of fly that reproduces in pig waste and that the outbreak was linked to the pig farms. It was unclear whether health officials had identified a suspected pathogen responsible for this outbreak.

Smithfield Foods Company poisoning enviroment with their farms all over the world
By Karga Fantasma, Free Radio Chukshon, April 12, 2009
Smithfield Foods is a global food company that claims to provide good food in a responsible manner. The truth is they have a farm with the brand "Granjas de Carroll" in Perote, Veracruz, Mexico, where they are poisoning potable water, and the environment trowing dead pigs in holes without sanitary measures. They own different brands all over the world. The American subsidiary of this multinational company was expelled from North Carolina and Virginia in the United States for not fulfilling sanitary measures.
In Mexico, there is a movement of environmentalists that have a struggle against this company Carroll Farms. There are now around 20 towns that are part of this movement. 5 activists face charges.
(...) the company throws the chemical remains and excrement from the pigs into the Parote lagune, and the smell it contaminates the whole valley. The settlers from the valley also suffer from water shortage because it is used up on the pig farm. This contamination has been the cause of a epidemic outbreak of pneumonia that was transported by the flies from the lagune towards the town.
This company Smithfield Foods claim to "remain 100 percent committed to environmental leadership, community involvement, employee safety, animal welfare and high-quality food".

Scandinavië: groepsverkrachtingen door Arabische immigranten

Nieuw Religieus Peil, 27 april, 2009

Nieuw Religieus Peil, 25 april 2009

'The U.S must also consider when and how to talk with political movements that have substantial public support and have renounced violence, but are outlawed or restricted by authoritarian governments allied to the U.S. The Muslim Brotherhood parties in Egypt and Jordan are arguably in this category. In general, the Leadership Group supports engagement with groups that have clearly demonstrated a commitment to nonviolent participation in politics. However, as noted earlier, the main focus of U.S. engagement should be to help strengthen institutions of governance and civic participation, rather than to support or oppose players in internal political contests.'

Met hierbij als noot (pagina 61 rapport):

'It is important for the U.S. to assess the rejection of violence not only in practice, but also in principle. The Muslim Brotherhood organizations in Egypt and jordan have renounced violence against their respective governments but still support the use of violence against Israel by other groups.'

Who speaks for islam; what a billion muslims really think'.

The prestigious journal Nature is publishing important new research: 'Rapid sea-level rise and reef back-stepping at the close of the last interglacial highstand' (subs. required, abstract below). As Nature explains in a summary and author interview (subs. requiered):
Some consequences of climate change are already unfolding. Glaciers and ice sheets are melting, and sea levels are rising as a result. However, scientists aren’t certain by how much the rate of sea-level rise might accelerate; current predictions for increases until 2100 range from 0.3 centimetres to 1.4 centimetres per year. But Paul Blanchon, a geoscientist at the National Autonomous University of Mexico in Cancún, and his colleagues have learned that a sudden, catastrophic increase of more than 5 centimetres per year over a 50-year stretch is possible. On page 881, they describe their discovery that a sea-level jump of 2–3 metres already happened about 121,000 years ago. Blanchon tells Nature how and why it could recur.

Productie biobrandstof verdubbelt CO2-uitstoot

Rainforest is being cleared for biofuel crops

Friends of the Earth, April 15, 2009

Biofuels could have doubled the carbon dioxide emissions of the fossil fuels [petrol and diesel] they replace - equivalent to putting half a million extra cars on the road - since a new law adding them to UK fuel came in a year ago, new research published by Friends of the Earth shows today (April 15, 2009).

(...) According to the new figures, soy crops from US, Argentina and Brazil, used in the most common biodiesels sold in the UK, could be causing 3 times more emissions than conventional fossil fuels. Even biofuels grown on farmland in the UK are contributing to the problem by pushing aside other crops and adding to the pressure on carbon- rich rainforests in countries like Indonesia, Malaysia and Brazil.

(...) In theory biofuels are good for the climate because plants absorb carbon, which is re-released when the fuel is burnt. However, research now suggests that growing crops for fuel increases demand for land and leads to more rainforests being turned into farmland - releasing huge amounts of carbon from the soil and trees into the atmosphere. Official statistics currently leave out these extra ‘indirect' emissions (...)

Evolutie, natuur, mens & doelgerichtheid

- (menselijke) doelgerichtheid is een illusie'[*] (Nietzsche?);

Trial and error.

[...] By comparing the dates of sea level rises with known increases in temperature, based on studies of ice cores from the Antarctic, they have shown the ice sheets respond rapidly to global warming.
It was previously believed that temperature rise preceded ice sheet melting by more than 3000 years. "But these two variables have operated in phase for the major termination events in the past 500,000 years," the researchers write in the paper.
Dutton says this suggests ice sheets are capable of responding quickly to increasing temperature and CO2.

Afghanistan: Westen steunt onrecht

By Julian Borger, The Guardian, April 1, 2009
